The part of Rebel Without A Cause that I will analyze is the scene where Jim and his parents are on the stairs, arguing. The blocking throughout the scene shows each characters place in the story. Jim and his mother constantly trade places on the stairs, with either one of them on a higher stair, showing their 'superiority' in the situation. Throughout the argument, Jim's father stays at the bottom of the staircase, throwing a word or two in to defend his controlling wife. As well as Jims mother showing dominance over him and his father, the scene also shows Jims ability to control his father. The placement of each character, with the interchanging positions of Jim and his mother, during this argument, shows their place in the family.
